My kids loved to dress themselves from a very early age. My one friend has her boys in matching outfits, and I'm so jealous that they let her dress them. She claims it's because they're boys. But I will say even my boy wanted to pick out his own clothes starting around two years old.
Now, dealing with a two-year old's temper regarding the clothes he wears and an 8-month old's temper to try and pull up on the drawers while he's deciding which shirt he is going to wear is frustrating, to say the least. I realized I would have to be smart about the clothes stored in his dresser drawers to help minimize the fussing on which pants to wear or what shirt semi-matched. I kept only a handful of items in at a time--those that both fit and were the right season. (I can't admit to doing this now for whatever reason.)
A friend today--also a Baby Buncher with her youngest two--said she just resorted to buying everything in the colors red, white and blue (plus khaki) for her boys. She explained this simplified the process in the morning and made everything match even if they insisted on dressing themselves each morning. I suppose occasionally you'll have the red shirt with the red shorts, but at least everything is kind of "matching." A great tip!
We haven't hit that dress themselves phase yet but I'm dreading it. The khaki with neutral colors is a smart idea!

my 2.5 year old now understands the concept of matching colors pretty well, and can now utter that very important phrase "no daddy that doesn't match". I trust her to dress herself more than I trust my husband to dress her these days!

That's exactly what my husband was doing when we met. He's red/green colorblind, and to make things easier on himself, he only owned shirts that were blue or green or a combination. Luckily, he's added more color to his wardrobe since then.
My daughters say forget khaki and denim... sparkles and glitter are the new neutrals. They're convinced they go with anything.
